south by southeast by Kristina WoodhillAre your daffodils
still orange, yellow, white?
Does he color them
a black
to keep their beauty
from your sight?
He has pulled your hair back
in a bun
of gross austerity;
Your fAce
yoUr FAce
yOur faCE
looks like the man's
recarving Adam's
rib,
a sexless, harsh
device;
shapeless
blouse
shapeless
skirt
shapeless
breasts
straight
straight
straight
straight
curves.
Honey, your family photo
is like a scene
from an old
Hitchcock movie
and
it's my hand I see
reaching to cover
my open
screaming
mouth!
I'd reach down
4 states and
all 39 steps
to pull you out
of your fenced
salvation,
but I do not know
how
to reach the soul
of my friend,
to wipe that
stilled life
smile
off your face.

Author's Note: A childhood friend lives in a strict commune - a mind and a soul is a sad, sad thing to waste.

Posted by Charlie Morgan on 03/28/10 at 04:05 AM ...wow-er...well-stated with lamentations of a deep care. delicately, but really put. |
Posted by Joan Serratelli on 03/28/10 at 03:31 PM You echoed my sentiments. You cannot waste your heart and soul. It's all we have. We are all human. My heart and my soul are not for sale. Life is too short and too precious to waste. One day wasted is a crime. Great write. Thanks for this observation of human nature. |
Posted by Clara Mae Gregory on 03/28/10 at 04:00 PM Great poem! It touches me in the inner core....we often have to deal with observing friends or family around us that are in destructive or wasteful circumstances and the worst is being helpless to helping them. sad sad sad |
Posted by Clara Mae Gregory on 03/28/10 at 04:02 PM ps...and I forgot to mention, I love the play on words and letters, with the caps and lower case variations....creative and cool |
Posted by George Hoerner on 03/28/10 at 09:37 PM A really touching write Kristina. That can be sad and yet if chosen how different is it from a vow of chastity or silence, etc. I am torn only because if I were a "true believer" I'd have to become a monk walking the streets looking to help those less well off than I. |
Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 03/29/10 at 01:08 AM Wow, this is very good and very sad. I thought, "in a bun/of gross austerity;" was great! You have succeeded in bring her into a community though, your own community of caring. Thanks.
