The Dead Leaves

by Michael Defries

Even the dead leaves have power
The wind speaks carrying messages
From earth to earth to ear to
Ear of forests rain to land masses

Of mountains near and surrounded
By the flow of power, true power
Awesome the force of water as it
Unleashes its fury upon gates of ours

Ivy vines grow like the dead dance
Of the leaves when earth dances
Around them in them. See the trees
But remember the leaves have power

The air carries life from mountain ice
To ants in the wild, feeding like the
Hunger storm the fury of the little
Beasts harmonious yet simply brilliant

Effort speaks to these elm as the oaks
Watch over the mosses and the
Morning dew collects on the lily pads
Only frogs appreciate. How the earth

How the leaves have structure order
They remind us of seasons pass and
Winter to come before setting their
Magenta crimson aubergene vignettes

Across their secret towns and hide in
A way reminiscent of every year’s past
Spring Summer Fall falling down down
Down to the bears in hibernation stance

Keeps the humble alive and alert to it
Sanctity transcribed by the cold bone
Chill when you step into it. These leaves
Have some power we even can’t detect.

the sounds throughout this are really interesting and the construction and repetition give it a great flow as you read down the page...and then there's the imagery, which is dead on (no pun intended) and really draws the reader in. thanks for sharing...

Pretty much any poem about nature gets me, and this is no exception. Wonderful descriptions, Michael. Very well done :)
