Dear Mr. Fantasy

by Tony Whitaker

When pike or plague
Scoured the earth
To leave the “best”
Of the rest of us

When Popes and pagans
Ruled man’s mind
Gold paved roads
Through eternal time

Our frittered thoughts
Filled a mystic sea
Teeming with wonders
Fraught with fantasies

Today we drift
In cookie cutter roles
Where money and power
Steal our souls

So what comes next?
Oh, time will tell
A Garden of Eden
Or a desert in Hell

I love this, it is so lyrical and the images the poem evokes are classic! You certainly have a way with words!

Not being a determinist, I believe God has given us a choice. Ours to make. Thought provoking indeed! (Did you mean teeming rather than teaming? Either could fit I suppose.)

Although I love the whole of this poem, the third stanza seems to hit home the most. I hear in that fourth verse an echo of Gabriel Marcel and other Existential philosophers. And finally, I hate to say it, but I am not nearly the optimist I used to be and that last verse reflects a place I have gone in recent weeks as i observe and contemplate what is happening at home and abroad. Thanks for this jewel, Tony.

Congrats on POTD! Loved the title to this, Tony, and the thoughts and pondering within. Thanks!
