Dancing with a Poet

by Glenn Currier

I was dancing with a poet
in a quirky reel
but touched a vapid stranger
whose child he does not feel.

Next a dancer whispers
to whisk us off the floor
to spin the roulette wheel
shun the dirty poor
dealing hollow deal.

Then the cellist’s hand
who pulled the bow
in symphonic grand
and sonorous strains
whose audience once adored
now ignore his warbling rains.

The poet’s eyes fixed on mine
across the floor glides and reaches
toward my fingers to entwine
his versing words and teaches
the unrhymed rhythms he fashions
of lonely, sad and mad
in contradicting passions.

This poet who seems my truest partner
cannot stay my steps away
into the rocky field
where stumbling I fall
onto the raging stones
where thimbles then cups
of time erode and squander
in the rush upon the eve
of a poem’s unlearned
unheard
unspoken
tone.

Great poetic majesty in this! I am suggesting it for POTD and adding it to my favorites!

Glenn, I love the idea of:"where thimbles then cups of time erode and squander", that it starts with a thimble, because it does, you nailed that one. And this whole piece is quite grand, fav for me too, even potd...(two are better than one!) Delighted, Thanks.

I too have suggested this for POTD. I had to read it three times to soak in all it says (plus it is 4 am and just getting up). What a great read to start the morning Glenn!

Outstanding poetry! It has my vote for potd and going in my favorites too. This is one of your masterpieces I think. Loved it very much!

You seem to have encountered a new inspiration, and I LOVE the product of that inspiration, this poem. Greg already commented on my favorite part of the poem in much the same the way I would have - but, yeah, wow. That particular line provokes such strong images for me!

I admire the progression in numbers of lines and rhyme from one stanza to the next. Is this a "named" form of poetry? I enjoyed the "quirky reel", the orchestral feel to this 'dance', and how the muse is a separate but mighty force, oft times ignored, or so my mind's eye sees this fascinating offering.

There are days when I am starved for inspiration, for spark to get me through, insight in to why we are and who we are and then I stumble onto something that speaks to me, through me and shows me that there are voices in this world that get it, truly get it and one of those voices is yours. I am in awe of this poem and I too vote it a fave and POTD. Thanks for this dance poet. smh.

"of lonely, sad and mad
in contradicting passions"
is genius in your passion to fashion the rhythm of your rhyme. I think I've died and gone to heaven. It's Friday night and I can soak in the poetry of friends on a shared Pathetic path of expressing what has impressed our minds. What a joy to find this as #1 and deservedly so!

Touching, beautiful, awe-inspiring.
