Two Brothers in an Amber Plate by Glenn CurrierTwo brothers swell upon the night
their words unfaded pure and bright
they heard the call from isle to isle
vanquished dark and purple guile.
When last he entered in the room
in tears languishing in the doom
encased in sorrow between the walls
he saw a glow within the pall
The story in the amber plate
each boy with a half dollar weight
one in haste for candy and rides
at the fair but the other decides
To reserve his treasure
for a fortune without measure
but going home he made a stop
for in the window of the shop
He saw it in filigree relief
mama’s hair a familiar motif
gave the man his thirty five cents
a gift for a life without pretense.
Each Sunday his tender creek
and his red torrent meet to speak
across the air and find each other
two sons of one gentle mother.
Now one has gone upon the tide
the other thrown regrets aside
to darkness and its idle threat
join their dreams and dreams beget. 09/26/2009 Author's Note: Dedicated to my dear boyhood friend Earl Dye and his brother Eurie who died September 14, 2009.

Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 09/26/09 at 11:58 AM Your rhymes flow naturally, unpressured to get where they are going. The tone and voice are wonderful, and we should all remember that childhood, like a forgotten fire, can always flare up again within us. And should. Delighted. Thanks. |
Posted by George Hoerner on 09/27/09 at 01:01 PM Very well done Glenn. I too have a childhood friend no longer here. Some day I'll try to write the words that need be said. Though no doubt not as well as you have here. |
Posted by Charlie Morgan on 09/28/09 at 07:44 AM ...glenn, what george and greg said...it walked well. |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 09/30/09 at 03:02 PM Fine dedication Glenn. The rhyming adds archaic but effective weight to the message. |
