Mmmmmmmmmmm

by Peter Humphreys

startled
she came
out of the mist
along the dyke
auburn hair
blackened by damp
she walked
t'wards me
relentlessly
with steady steps
as if she knew me
and I her

above us
gulls cackled
ridicule
upon our heads
as the sea crept
unceasingly
closer

did I know her
could I remember her
panic set in
as the chill

Mmmmmmmmmmm
Mmmmmmmmmmm

the fog horn wailed
in its desultory fashion
yet on she walked
her bare feet
moving silently
effortlessly
on the shingle

there was something
about her that
struck me hard
and desperate

was she hope relinquished
a dream abandoned
an idyl scorned
she walked on past
or was it
through me

Mmmmmmmmmmm
Mmmmmmmmmmm

I am completely quieted by these lines. This poem is more than a wonderful idea, for me it approaches sublime. The feelings and images give way to something ethereal. Saying it is an instant favorite of mine, is a gross understatement...it both focal point and reference. I'm blown away by it. Just beautifully, and honestly voiced. Bravo, Peter. And thanks for this.

Hi Peter, what a wonderfully compelling piece. It makes me look back at a time when we often went to the coast. Your lines pull me back to those foggy mornings I would walk the beach and everything was so surreal and the foghorns in the mist. MMMMMMMMMM. Nice!

I completely enjoyed this piece... reminded me of an old Bogart & Bacall Movie. Excellent visual.

Well, I love a mystery and the sea and you have combined them beautifully here. It stands me still, quite frankly, and I can clearly hear that fog horn as I wait. Congrats on POTD!

Spooky stuff Peter; aptly expressed with just the right amount of tension. Here's a little OOOOOOOHHHHHH t'go with your Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
