SCRABBLE

by Sandy M. Humphrey

QUIET
U
IRRITATED
R
KIDDING

Sitting silent pushing PSP buttons
Playing scrabble while you watch NCIS
Wondering WHY you can be irritated with
MY fascination with words on a screen
When I never comment on your ability
To watch the same rerun over and over again

So we are at a standstill and I am looking for
A fifty-bonus word among pretend tiles
To hit the RIGHT BRIGHTLY colored squares
In order to UP my skill points because
I cannot believe that when I look at the
Graph a computer tells me that I need
To WORK on my vocabulary after I have

Spelled ZED and CRAZED and I do not
Know who Nic is and how they were
Lucky enough to spell PORTLIER in a triple
Letter, triple word BONUS for using
All the letters off of one of my WORDS
Teach me to set up the BOARD

Seems like I could set up a conversation
Just as easily with words like
KINDNESS and KUDUS
Or HELLO and HALO
But instead there is just a GRUNT
From the other side of the room
SILENCE and the GAME
Continues at LEVEL four

Author's Note: Hobbies or preoccupation to avoid conversation? Dazed and confused by the tiles on the screen...or avoiding stressful situations? Or just a PSP obsessed player, gamer really????

...sandy, that's me with NYTimes crossword, love the juxtaposition of the us's in this: me/mine you/yours and we're hoping that the twain will meet, eh? good write, delightful perspecive, all the way thru...

Aren't relationships fun? Divergent interests and aptitudes... all those social scientific words that fail to capture the tension, the challenge, the creative impulse like your poem does so well. I like the play of competition in this and how it tugs us in and out of relationship. The word play is delightful. I love words too, but nobody will play word games with me. They would rather beat me at numbers games. :-) I salute your wordsworth!

Amazing how silent communication reflects sometimes a reality more words we throw around like marbles. Sometimes they hit the mark and sometimes they don't. Great write lady.

I think our relationships always help us to carry on because they always presuppose further developments, a future - and also because we live as if our only task was precisely to have relationships with other people. Besides, they make great poetic fodder! And in your case an excellent poem! Thanks.

Clever beginning, catching this reader. You've combined a simple game with word use and different interests that portrays relationships very well. That last stanza brings it all home. WEll done.

I guess a night on the tiles constitutes an excellent conversation piece on this evidence...

Very clever and a brilliant way to pen a message!

The way you write this - I feel as if I'm AT the Scrabble board looking for a great word to match your wit and creativity. Thunder-storming poem in all lightning brilliance!
