the genuine article by Kristina Woodhilli have met the
genuine article
in high altitude
forests of
eastern idaho
in huckleberry
season when we
pick, pick, pick,
thinking 50 bucks
a gallon, my god,
what am I doing
here in juicy jeans
and scratched arms
tiny buckets tied to
waists, afraid to let go,
when half an hour past
mine
s p i

p i c k e d u p,
p i c k e d u p,
picked up
this is insane
i am insane
and that damn dog,
that huckleberry hound,
walks casually beside us
and gently,
with lips like a camel
finding succulent leaves
among the camel thorn,
pulls the huckleberries
from their stems
again
and
again
and
again

Posted by Charlie Morgan on 08/26/09 at 05:35 PM ...cool pic, kristina...huckleberries, eh? for me it was blackberries, i can see that canine wonderin' 'what's it all about Alfie?'
Posted by A. Paige White on 08/26/09 at 05:54 PM I haven't had huckleberries in years. To me they taste so much better than blueberries. I'd forgotten all about that one little bush down behind the chicken coop... way back when. Love your huckleberry hounding rounding it off. Wonderful!
Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 08/26/09 at 06:22 PM Amazingly popular in Eastern Wa, Idaho and Montana...they do everything with huckleberries, including, beer, mustard and BBQ sauce. What a great outing...love the dog'd camel lips! Thanks.
| Posted by David Hill on 08/27/09 at 12:26 AM I like the way this looks on the page, the spill in the middle. I like the way the dog needn’t bother with the human nonsense; buckets and money and mess. I like the description of the way he skillfully plucks the fruit. Lastly, Huckleberry Hound is one of my favorite actors (…that‘s oh so merry, chuckleberry, Huckleberry Hound! I can sing the theme song.).

Posted by Glenn Currier on 08/29/09 at 04:15 PM Ah yes, the huckleberries. I have picked blackberries and dewberries and grapes. I've read Finn. I have eaten with great relish its jam from jars acquired on the highways of Oregon, but only now can I appreciate the picking of those marvelous fruits of the field. My sister who lives in your great state, has told me that she picked berries and how much money she saved by doing so, but did not describe the picking. Thanks for sharing the experience.
