Lodgepole Pines

by George Hoerner

nothing is there
between the trees
but more trees

each leaning
against the next
arms intertwined

each shielding
its neighbor
from winter wind

providing
protection
perfectly

sharing the land
on which they stand
together making

a forest

Author's Note: In response to Kathleen's "Yet" and my visualization of the Tetons’ lodgepole pine forests.

...tis nice to specify a "tree-ness" then explode into a forest...kudos on that bubba...

Saw many of them while picking huckleberries, and was amused by the intertwining trunks of some, as if side by side just wasn't quite enough to keep the wind at bay. Thanks for this.

Ah, the thought of standing together to make a forest is my takeaway from this poem. It is sort of like this website isn't it? What would we do without the pines, their patient standing and growing - enough for us to make our homes and perpetuate OUR species. Good one, George.

This is lovely...like a mural of the Tetons before my eyes! I love nature poems!

Beautiful images for those trapped by cubicle land, a nice picturesque escape. smh

Such a vivid scene serene... Good stuff by George!

Saw lots of them in Yellowstone last month. I love the name as I do this poem. A tree used to support and provide a home. Brilliant the way it combines individual and group and the interdependence. Not a word wasted. Just right.
