Verdorben

by Wayne Tate

From this branch
on which I once stood,
my world of words
yields worms in wood.

Author's Note: such is life.

ps-fixed le tense. Sorry for the confusion everyone. I didn't realize I had left "once" out of the equation. It should be easier to understand now. ie-the past (cause) painfully meeting the present (effect).
pps-Verdorben = Rotten (German)

I like the repeated "w". I just wonder about the tense of "stood" vs. "yields". Should the tense agree, either past tense or present tense consistently? Just my tiny little goofy observation :-). Ever read C.S. Lewis? One of his demons is named "wormwood".

I really enjoyed the perching of personal in your poem, but experienced pretty much universally in the bitter flavors we often find in life. Thoroughly enjoyable!

ah, so the sounds are truly incredible (intelligent sounds woven perfectly)...and it hits so close to home, I feel like I'm standing on that branch myself...there's a quiet knowledge that comes out of this one...a humanity and wisdom that I really enjoy in these words...because that's really what it's about (the writing)...and you've expressed it all so well here...and in such few words...I can't tell you how glad I am to have had the chance to stop and read...

Short and not so sweet but I do so relate. You express the riskiness in being a poet - wondering if you are undermining the very branches up on which you are perched. Powerful poem. It packs a wollup.

I love the idea of a tree and the branch. Enjoyed the "w" words, especially the image of what worms can do to wood. Have to agree with Alison on the tense thing.

Aber das Leben ist geliebt in Worten wie diese! Schönes Wochenende! (But life is loved in words such as these. Have a beautiful weekend!).
