a birthday for him

by Charlie Morgan

a house, still; dog, lazing.
pinata idles, bursting with
toys, candies and kid dreams,
a lonely pool begs for tiny toes.

all for a birthday extant;
a Mankind's rekindling of spirits,
one at a time; Glory be to God.
thursday afternoon slumbers.

i'll be on the ready, alert.
i'm a Smokey [the] Bear,
shovel-in-hand. at attention.

one more year's birthday takes
me further away from Kai;
closer still but further away.

he gets older, so do i;
ebb and flow are our moves;
we link in Time, Generations.

knowing that life has many choices;
eternity has two. i want him to know.
so, if he knows Him then he will know.

Oh Chaz this is wonderful. We've had a pinata hanging up where I work. A pink flamingo no less, so I was hooked from the first stanza. The rest of it led me so gently into the future of the next generation we're celebrating in our grandchildren. Lovely poetry to end my day with. Thank you!

Happy, Happy Birthday to Kai. What a coincidence My son and his son both celebrated a birthday on Thursday the 11th. It's a small small world. and so much for the better for us old folks uh?

I love reading poems living with your grandson. Being with young children never ceases to be Life-giving to me. Children can infect us with the Spirit without even trying - maybe BECAUSE they aren't trying. The fifth stanza is profound and poignant. In the last, you could have just as easily written "if he knows Me, then he will know" because Kai's being with you, I am certain, gives him a taste of the Divine. Wonderful, wonderful poem, my friend. Thank you.

Wow, I love this. The last stanza is the best, as even tho you grow farther apart HERE....in the longrun, if he knows HIM, the two will come together again.
