Between The Lines

by Chris Sorrenti

read between the lines babe
I say to you
but you don’t believe in poetry

we stare at the tube
go out with our friends
but no interest in the real me

you say
prove the rationality of my behavior
let me see the dollar signs

well teeth don’t come easy babe
when you're pulling them from a tiger
success never achieved without its price

look between the lines
I say to you
if you really want to know who I am

but you don’t like to read babe
and that’s a mistake
cause all the answers are written in my poetry

yes, indeed they are...I'm captivated from the first stanza and how it ends (with "but you don't believe in poetry") and am immersed in the following words for all they hold in meaning and flow (bit like a song...to me anyway).......I think I may remember this from before (your words have the tendency to stick with me for a long time) and am so glad to read them today...

1985 was the year I was born. Heh. Great use of repetition and focus. This does such a good job of just hitting that point home.

Oh...I know what it's like to be putting so much into the words on the page, the other person oblivious to what is being said. It's there in the black, and more in the white, the space between, the places where words won't fit. But it's there if they'd just seeeeeeeeeeeeeee..... plus, this is your MOST precious expression, and it sucks when it isn't acknowledged. The preciousness isn't lost on everyone out here, Chris, not by a long shot.

I enjoyed this look back in your life, Chris, a theme that can define many relationships. A fine title.

I agree with the premise of this one...if they don't like poetry or reading, there's not much future or hope! lol at least, that's been my experience... not much to talk about... lol thanks for sharing.. alisa

Certainly in your case the way to a man's heart is through his poetry! Your lady friends have to know that! LOL!!

Amazing. There are no better words, in my opinion, that express how a poet feels when someone gets frustrated that you don't show them the "real you". We see the details in everyone but very few take the time to examine the details in us. "look between the lines/ I say to you/if you really want to know who I am/but you don’t like to read babe/and that’s a mistake/cause all the answers are written in my poetry" My favorite part. Exactly what I would say to my own muse.
