Capturing the Moment

by Genevieve Sturrock

a brilliant smile
flashes in her beautiful face
an arrogant statement
followed by a defensive rebuttal
young eyes losing their innocence
flick to mine
looking for answers
to brand new questions
asked by generations before

broad shoulders fill out
the shirt that hangs
halfway to his knees
an adult frame emerging
from his child's body
a questing hand
gently seeks my own
tightly hanging on
for just a moment
then slips away

between them a blonde head swivels
angled up to see their faces
he watches all and
tries out their expressions
mimics their voices and cadence
before slipping back into
the child's world that
he now inhabits alone

laughter surrounds us
three conversations
swirl around, pulling me
in different directions
watching them grow up
pull away, come back
wrap me in their arms
tug me for attention
push me away
disdain my opinion
seek my approval
reach out
pull back
smile
scowl
grin
grimace
hug
tug
push
pull

i wish i could capture
each and every
nuance, moment, word, emotion
and spin it out to encompass
the time we spend apart
i am so afraid that
the next time i see them
they will be grown
and i will have missed
their childhood completely

you've captured so much more than a moment here...you've described beautifully all of the things that make up the unique relationship between parents and children...and the inevitable introspection...it's like an internal portrait in places....very nice...

Me too. Refreshingly different piece of family introspection.

I so felt what you have expressed so completely here. A very sensitive piece, with a healthy push and pull of growing.

You capture here the essence of it all, the loving the growing the needing and the missing those moments as they pass into the realm of memory. love it --bf

The illustration of relationship is quite breath taking. Thank you!
