Polite Formality

by George Hoerner

is it like that?
the slightest touch
of a hug
the low said helloes
attempted humor
to move the still air

what i want
is to be left alone
the way i’ve lived or not
right next to you
i know you care
but i’m not JC
you’ll only think
occasionally of me

let me wander
off into a valley
with tall peaks
guarding its treasure
let me return
joining the universe
and its totality

leave me as
food for the soil
the animals
trying to survive
in man’s world
let me read poems
and hear music
till my eyes close

You give the natural conclusion a quiet dignity. I like that a lot. Thank you.
