Sainthood

by Erik Jensen

Grandpa used to tell me about sifting
through the static buzz to hear the prophets recall
Christ play by play. He the most loyal disciple,
reciting the Word back to his momma word for word,
practicing each afternoon in the streets
with the other boys clad in starched, clerical-collar white shirts.

Today, I wonder at him in his piety and read
the gospels of each of the Saints, hoping to become
just that much more Christ-like, steady in my thoughts and hands
and crossing each field bearing a gold and black
cross as the next disciple.

I really like the tone to this, the look back to your Grandfather, the aspiring without preaching. It is a quiet testimony. Thank you.

A loving tribute, I love stanza two and the way you relate it to your aspirations. smh

I had a grand pa once - he was a saint of sorts of the irreverent - I miss him - you give the gift of love - in remembrance of the children of God past - thank you - Thank God - thank you ..
