Shoulders Shrug

by Joe Cramer

She said, meet me for coffee,

It has been such a long time.

This is not what I wanted to do,

I am so very lost within this rhyme.

As two old friends, yes, former lovers greet

Perhaps a peck on the cheek, a hug.

We share some smiles, a laugh

While I sit there, my shoulders shrug.

For me, former lovers, and some that wouldn't accept my advances, but we became and remained friends. Worthy poetic snapshot for all who can relate.

There is a lovely short story on on two lover's meeting for coffee, titled "A Dill Pickle". The author's name escapes me now, but I was so reminded of it upon first glance of your poem. You capture as much emotion as that beautiful story. And the lines "This is not what I wanted to do, I am so very lost within this rhyme" create such impact and connection with all the other lines that the picture you capture is vivid. Well done and thanks, that was a pleasant story to remember.

Correction: it was two FORMER lovers. Btw I also like the way the poem ends and is aptly titled.

Sweet yet melancholy... You capture the moment so well.

Different signals from two different people, but the shoulders tell the tale. Thank you.
