Little Boy with Smiling Eyes by Fredrich Mohre
On 11/11/77 my son was born, and we were elated after many years of trying to have kids.Within two months I was again sent oveseas, for a two year seperation from my family. I wrote this a few months after arriving in Germany. I was sitting in my barracks room, drinking Jackie D., and wondering just what the hell I was doing there, trying to decide what was really important in my life.
Little Boy with smiling eyes,
perfection, few will see.
I want to say, “I Love You”,
you mean so much to me.
You’re such a special little gift,
of happiness and joy.
You’re priceless, and you’re sacred.
I love you, baby boy.
I watched you as you came here-
this world so stark and cold.
I cried a tear, to see you,
your first cry touched my soul.
If I could only tell you
my feelings on that day.
For you are so important;
beyond what words can say.
I sit and see your pictures.
I see laughter, I see smiles.
It causes pain and heartache,
this separation of the miles.
Though we are not together
and I can’t hold you close,
I just want to tell you,
I think that you’re the most.
So keep this little letter,
and hold it for an age.
For with all my “ I Love You’s”
my teardrops stain this page.
Little boy with smiling eyes,
perfection, few will see,
I want to say, “ I Love You”.
You mean so much to me.
Love, your Dad, Germany 1978
