River Watch

by George Hoerner

the river flows slowly past

it has been watching

as each building crumbled

as each person was dispatched

to some half hospital

filled with screams and

arms and legs tossed aside

as man degrades this land

provided by nature as opportunity

discarded as another chapter in

man’s disastrous history

read by a river wishing

to change its course

passed drop by drop

into oceans circulating

the pages from

Euphrates and Tigris to

Mekong to Han

Yangtze to Red

Elba to Danube

Themes to Mississippi

Ural to Nile

Sounds like a little bit of infinity to me. Gorgeously written.

The river as metaphor...always and forever..and this time man's own haphazard journey to destruction "read by a river wishing to change its course." Quietly superb, George.

George, I think this to be a great idea of a poem. It's a "wish I'd thought of that" read for me. You nailed it. Delighted. Thanks.

Ooooh, I love the listing of rivers in this - those that bind this world's flow. A fine mix of history read, courses changed. Great theme!

...george, ahhh a river, the river metaphor...i like, i like...Heraclitus[teacher of Craytlus [ca. 380-300 b.c.] talked about a river and stepping in it TWICE, Craytlus shouted-out, sir you can't step in a river EVEN ONCE...HEAVY poetics, heavy point.

I'm not sure what to add...its a good metaphor, and the listing of rivers at the end moves it up to a universal place. I like.

It's difficult to imagine just how many droplets have flowed into the sea over time. But to sit and contemplate near the rivers edge is certainly mesmerizing, as is your flowing poem. good stuff, George!

you are so like a river, George, always running your course and always toward the human interest.
