The Very small Snowmen

by Mary Ellen Smith

The very small snowmen

That winter was fierce, the wind blew so hard

And hardly a snowman was built in a yard.

They all looked so empty, the yards were so bare

In all of the town, not a snowman was there.

It was too cold to go out and play in the snow

The wind chill, a cold minus ten don’t you know.

And all of the children up one street and down

Stood at their windows, on their faces a frown.

The flurries went drifting into corners and such

As the kids watched the snow that they loved oh so much.

They watched it dress branches and twigs all in white

They watched as it swirled on into the night.

When day came they ran to their mothers to say,

“Can we please go out and build a snowman today?”

The moms looked out the windows, the cold wind was blowing

It looked like a blizzard, not your everyday snowing!

“Not today.” They all said down and up the whole street.

“You’ll have to stay here in the house with the heat.”

Well from where he did sit, Santa Claus saw

No break in the storm, no chance for a thaw.

And he had heard of the kids and their no snowman groaning

That’s when he got on the phone and got phoning.

He phoned all the elves who were busy toy making

Busy with painting, and singing and baking.

He took them that night on an emergency run

Santa took the elves out to the town to have fun.

Fun building snowmen up one street and down

“In each yard build a snowman, throughout the whole town!”

And the elves did their jobs and the elves did it well

And on each finished snowman they each left a bell.

Then just before dawn, before the light of the day

Santa picked up the elves and whisked them away.

Soon at every iced window the children were found

Clapping and laughing and looking around.

In each yard was a snowman that looked like the elves.

Tiny in size, built as tall as themselves.

And when the wind blew you could hear the bells ringing

It was as if Santa’s elves themselves were there singing!

That year when the kids finally went out to play

That year when the sun finally came out one day,

Up one street and down you could hear the kid’s laughter

Then and whenever it snowed every Christmas thereafter!

And the great thing about having elves play with snow

Even after the winter when all green things grow,

Their snowmen don’t leave; they don’t melt in the sun

Because elves build their snowmen with magic elf fun!

A grand winter time storypoem. Lots of warm fun reading for those bitterly cold days! A great read aloud to the younger set!
