The Other

by George Hoerner

as he approached
i saw the color
of his eyes change
from hate to hunger

in the suns heat
he slowed a step
either sweat or tears
welled in his eyes

he took two more steps
dropped to his knees
his arms spread out
his only word spoken was

why?

Wow! This one hooked me right in and I'm still on the edge of my seat.

Hmmm...for some reason "prodigal son" comes to mind upon reading this. And with that thought, I like how you leave it up the reader to interpret its true meaning. Powerful stuff no matter which way the reader slices it.
