Politics vs Us

by Glenn Currier

I should know better.
We were doing just fine
exchanging news of children
whom we had hoped
would grow up
after leaving home,
comparing body aches
and the spending habits
of our husbands.

Then I had to ask
your thoughts about the election
having avoided discussions
of politics for years,
knowing the fires
in our left and right bellies.

Swiftly puffing up
on our boxes
now expert masons
we built our walls
and wondered
as the phones set down
what this would do to us.

Was our bond strong enough
to peek above the walls
to find the ego-releasing
lubricant of humor
about our tilts
and again sink into the warm waters
of our friendship?

Very nice write Glenn. I'm afraid most of us on either don't take loosing well. It's like the 'uncivil' war which will never end in this country at least not in the next century or two.

Loved stanza 3 - this poem is so true. I never know what to say to whom these days - volatility in the shape of a tongue....

This made me smile Glenn thinking about the banter between my daughter and I over the election. We sent anything we could find agaist each others candidate.....CharMin

You surely have caught the tension and tenuousness in the political life of today, perhaps more than for a long time.
