My Family Lives In The Zoo

by Thomas K. Hunt

Two Chinese Pigeons named Ling
and Lu
Decided one day to visit the zoo
They heard from a carrier they had relatives there
Living in a nest just left of the bears
Though a full days flight from Wan Chai to Tai Po
They couldn’t resist and decided to go
They left in the morning and arrived around eight
Only to find the locks on the gate
They decided to rest after such a long flight
Perched on a limb, tucked their heads for the night
The next morning when the day was new
They found the gate opened, and they flew right through
Stopped off for a breakfast of Goji berries
High in energy, taste nothing like cherries
Then they started their search for their kin
But weren’t too sure where to begin
They passed the zebras and the tigers too
Made friends with the monkeys and the kangaroos
They flew over a lion under the shade of a tree
Stopped to watch the antics of the chimpanzees
Said hi to a peacock that just stuck out his plume
Scurried past a skunk sharing his perfume
They heard the bears; they knew they were near
They perched in front of information to find ~> you are here
Then just to the left of the pandas, they saw
Uncle Le, Aunt Pang
And cousin Wong
The birds rejoiced and broke out in song
A pigeon tune from a time long gone
They sang and danced the rest of the day
Ate veggie fried rice and curds of whey
They spent the night in their three-room nest
They felt the love and felt truly blessed
In the morning, they were on their way
Back to the ski and to home in Wan Chai
But they’ll return to the zoo in Tai Po
To share the love, only a family can know

Excellent! Amusing poem...like a nursery rhyme, though much more sophisticated.

Really delightful - I could see a very colorful book with this poem - a child's feast of creatures and a lovely story for a family. Nicely done.
