black-eyed susan by Kristina Woodhillyou can't kill my black-eyed susan
buddy boy, yeah, buddy girl
you may call her yellow,
picking petals, tryin' to choose
your world
you may think her center
is just too, too brown
her perky petals plain,
uncurled
you can't kill my black-eyed susan
buddy boy, yeah, buddy girl
her seed is wind free, out of reach
you've got no dirt on her
you can't blow your whistle
and yell "thistle!" at my
cool cardoon
his purple hat you might stomp flat
his color might not match
your room
you
might butter up his cousin
artichoke
yet clutch his throat
you can't blow your whistle
and yell "thistle!" at my
cool cardoon
his seed is wind free, out of reach
you've got no dirt on him
i've got the hands to untie knots
in lassoes you've thrown at their sun
i've got the punch to sieve the
buckets you've hung high to
stay their rain
but they don't need my hands
nor fear your heaving lasso
buddy boy
and they don't need my punch
nor fear your bucket's metal
buddy girl
their seed is wind free
out of reach
you've got no dirt on them

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 10/10/08 at 01:44 AM Magnificent write Kristina! And quite lyrical; I was singing the stanzas in my head as I read them. 5 Gold ***** ATF. |
Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 10/10/08 at 06:41 PM Right, like it could be sung in a "round", just excellent. That keen eye/ear of yours towards nature, pays off big here. Thanks for the read. Delighted! |

Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 10/14/08 at 05:18 AM A very rich and hilarious song- I love the depth and heights of it- linguistic and botanical play. I looked up "cardoon" which is such a great word" and it comes fro "wild thistle" in the Latin. Also the buttering the artichoke is so delicious. Very spicy writing. I love the lassoe to the sun as well. So many good details. |
