Shadows

by Chris Sorrenti

chasing shadows
on the wall of life

people who once were
but are no more
we can’t talk to them
but they speak to us
through works of art
in countless different
shapes and colors

chasing shadows
on the wall of life

the Library of Congress
is full of them
dancing in the dust
of civilizations gone by
while the living etch out
fresh shadows
in the contours of the globe

chasing shadows
on the wall of life

the museums fill up
with new dinosaur bones
and the paleontologists say
if Tyrannosaurus
would have survived
he’d be running for President
of the United States

chasing shadows
on the wall of life

things that once were
but are no more
the newspaper printed a photo
of Manhattan
circa 1935
and the shadows on the wall
they smiled

Very reflective - I really like the "people....." stanza, and as more and more are lost from my family, their photos and writings become so precious. "chasing shadows on the wall of life" - a great repeating element.
