Awakening

by George Hoerner

it's august 18th, about 7pm
and i sit on the front porch
watching the sun which
has taken all day
to make its rounds
and now with a minor nod
it quickly vanishes over the ridge
and swims into the night
leaving just a figment of light
staving off the shadows
that hide behind the buildings
waiting to leap out full force
to cloak the valley in darkness

inside next to the computer
is the little piece of paper
your phone number
just waiting to be used
last night it was too late
this morning too early
and here it is
getting late again

will there ever be
a right time to disturb
someone after such a long time
and of what could i talk

the nightly news, the Olympics,
to say how have you been
after 50 odd years
what you wished
might have been said
in the few exchanges
of email messages where
you responded so briefly
to my meager attempts
at communication

no, you seem afraid to
reduce our distance
or you fear reawakening
my dreams

...george, notwithstanding the existential lament of what if's at the end, the physical-ity of the moment was just dynamite in it's description, i was nearly there on the porch w/ you...and by the way, call!!!!!!!!

This has a really fine flow to it - the sun making its rounds and being replaced by the shadows was great. (oh, by the way, call her, you fool!!!!) ;)

So still the surface of waters churning just below. Very vivid, George, and lovely.

I too think it is perfect the way the sun gives way to shadows and the day gives way to night, the way your assurance gives way to doubt...but you know when in doubt...punt or as others have said call, you got nothing to lose. smh

George, you persistently impress with your style. it seems laid back and soothing and yet it quickens the soul senses to alarming rates.

Ahhh the heart of a poet, beautifully expressed George. Somewhere there is a woman wondering why he hasn't called...

very well put- sort of stream of consciousness, but then constructed so distinctly
