Why I'll never be Poet Laureate

I can’t write as proficiently as some
Well give me a title
Then I can write anything
But those aren’t easy to come by
If you have one let me know
My name just isn’t right
It doesn’t sound silly enough
Well ok maybe it does
When you examine it more closely
I like to think i'm too bohemian
Well to be brutally honest
It’s the pay package
Or the total lack of one
I’m not a published poet
Well maybe I should submit some work
Yes ill send my writing to a publisher
Definitely tomorrow for sure…if I get a chance
My poetry just isn’t good enough
Although that doesn’t usually stop them
Exalting someone to the position who doesn’t deserve it
Who makes these choices anyway?
Does that make me sound bitter?
So maybe ill never join the elite
Dryden, words worth and Tennyson
Though had I been Tennyson
I wouldn’t have accepted as second choice
Ok who am I kidding, course I would

I suspect many have the poetry read more here on the Inet than if they been published on magazine pages or in a book. From what I read bookstores will be out of business in a couple of months or maybe a couple of decades. |

For one I throughly enjoyed the combination of bitter sarcasm; there is a humor in these lines that is usually hard to come by without being overdone. Secondly I like the question at hand here, and alas, I think it is the plight of every poet. Great job, Paul, keep up the good work. |
