Atreyu - Birth of the Next Generation

by Alison McKenzie

I suspect that
Your name was chosen,
Long before your Daddy’s seed
Even entered the equation –
Your little soul is that ancient.
I feel it on the wind -
Your arrival and all it will mean.

I don’t mean to say that
Your preciousness has anything to do
With physicality,
Though your parents will disagree
As they must!

The importance of the DNA
Coursing through your tiny veins,
The parents who are raising you
Definitely factor in;
For they will love you fiercely,
Protect you entirely
Infuse you completely
With all they believe in.
And all the pieces of your puzzle
Will fall into place in their perfect order.

Still, I see your individuality
As it is my birthright as your grandmother,
And I know that there is destiny in your birth,
In your journey,
And in everything you will have to say to the world
About who you are and why you are here.

And I love every moment that waits
On each of your new horizons.
I will treasure every step you take,
Even if you stumble,
It will be, to you, that
I love you perfectly,
Once removed as I am
From the fray of it.

Wisdom and karma will guide
The hearts that will open
And the barriers that will come down
Because you are here -
At last -
Dawn of the next generation.

Author's Note: Dedicated to the coming birth of my first grandchild, and to the bridges that might be built in his honor. Just for the record, he is being named after the character in the movie "Neverending Story" :-)

I loved that movie! And I love this poem! That movie is special to me because one time when Jarrod was little and sick enough to stay home from school we made a pallet on the floor, snuggled up together (the better to monitor his fever) and watched it over and over. It's a special movie to him too, just for that memory. This is just beautiful Ali.

I have three but only one from scratch grand child and it was amazing the moment we first met, how beautiful he is, I look at him and see his dad, his mom and his brother and sister but then something more, a knowledge of all of the hopes and dreams of another generation in this one...you will be so in love like you have never been before when you meet face to face and I cannot wait to read what joy you will write. smh
