dying large

by Maria Francesca

cancer
and strokes
and heart attacks;
same old methods
year upon year.
traffic collisions
and broken backs -
same boring funerals,
same boring tears.

This death-dealing business
is kind-of macabre
but it's my ball of wax -
it's my gift
it's my thing;
still, I long for some change
in my work-a-day job;
with less repetition
and ooddles more zing!

Now, don't you go judging
or calling me out
or siccing the wrath of your gods on my head.
I do but my duty -
it's what I'm about
and dull or exciting,
what's dead is still dead

and it's been quite a while since a loving-to-death.
It's years since an ice-dancer fell through the ice
or an extermination by garlicky breath
and we all love a good virgin sacrifice.

Consider the notion of dying large -
imagine the tales your descendents will tell!
Twice the bang for your buck, and at no extra charge;
the conclusion's the same, be it heaven or hell!

Try a death by banana!
by chocolate!
by sex!
Expire from bliss
or from murderous glee!
It needn't be painful
or gauche or complex
or expensive -
the truth is I do it for free!

What I'm saying is why be a part of the crowd?
You could spice up a fait that is quite accompli
if you'd just live with gusto, then die right out loud
being eaten by dingoes or mauled by a tree!
