Animal Cruelty

by Rula Shin

I close my eyes when I swallow
Most keep them open that are closed
What pleasures ensue out of sight
That squander reason out of mind

A lion is a beast who
Feasts on the flesh of the weak
His drive compelled by Mother
His eyes sewn shut at birth

ItÂ’s I who am monstrous
Devouring flesh out of lust
Compelled by my Mother
To neglect every possibility
Deciding not to choose who I AM

Falsely, I name the monster within
Yet a beast I never heard boast
Reason and Conscience divine
Claiming to choose if he please
Precious gifts of Godly Quality

Wow. I was so pissed I couldn't even write about it. This is perfect, Rula, just perfect. I'm sorry for their suffering, just so damn sorry.

We consumers have a lot to answer for...

I reel at the levels of meaning here. Reason , it seems to me, can both enemy and savior. It can help me make sense of the world, but also objectify other creatures. Thanks for this profound and beautiful poem.

reading these four stanzas provoke a mind to be set upon a path glorious or inglorious which we may or may have not paved ourselves, to trod forevermore, to prod ourselves with querying while we walk as to what our natural state of internal affairs are? we are set upon a finite journey to discover infinity.
