jeans on my genes by Charlie Morganhim standing, pulling up his 1 1/2 foot pants,
i smile, realizing i'm puttin jeans on my genes.
28 pounds of wrangling, rustling, bones and sinew
is this alter-Ego of mine; this door to my heart.
dragging his MoJo [Linus blanket] behind, thumb
inextricably plopped into his mouth; comfort.
better to lose his food and drink than lose MoJo,
he's learning early how valuable valuables are.
soon it will be his trike, later, his bicycle;
too soon, it will be his first date; prom.
and as happens, his memories will roost later;
currently all things happen at the same time.
he'll enter the world of yesterday and tomorrow;
concepts that escape him now, but define him later.
there will be a time when the roles are reversed;
Pappaw will need to be fed, and held onto like MoJo.

| Posted by Michelle Angelini on 06/24/08 at 05:56 PM Chaz, this is so tender. Yes, this little guy is at an age when he is unaware about worrying about yesterday and tomorrow, the present is all he knows. Somewhere along the line that all changes. And yes, the roles do reverse themselves. It's a bittersweet memory for me, with tears in my eyes, remembering how was the adult-child to my child-mother before she died. Haven't had a poem affect me like this in a while. Hug your little guy for me. |

| Posted by Glenn Currier on 06/26/08 at 01:05 PM Chaz, congrats on POTD... richly deserved... I love your pawppaw poems. Your poem paints such a vivid picture, I can see you leaning over this little apple of your eye, pulling up those jeans. Lets hope the other gene he has is your poetry gene. |

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 06/26/08 at 03:20 PM A fine piece - congrats on POTD! A family reunion this last weekend reinforces what you say here - celebrated my father-in-law's 95th with his great granddaughter of 3 on his lap. "and as happens, his memories will roost later;
currently all things happen at the same time." - I love these lines. |
