Honkers by Chris Sorrenti
Easy down the path, Spring to guide me;
my evening stroll pleasantly disturbed.
Serenaded first, then looking skyward,
I see the honkers, but dismay!
There's confusion in this squadron;
no clean V northbound;
resembling more a dogfight,
than the standard wing parade.
At first, I'm embarrassed for this bungled troop,
they themselves uncertain who's in charge,
then disappointment at ornithology
diverted from its path.
Finally the squabble ends in compromise;
focused, two separate wafts,
yet still no arrows point northward;
one east, the other west.

Posted by Bruce W Niedt on 05/27/08 at 03:33 AM Ooh, I do like this one - an amusing look at nature, and a sly metaphor for human foibles. Thanks for sharing this.... d:-) |

Posted by Glenn Currier on 06/19/08 at 04:22 AM Ah, your description makes me want to wander out onto the wetlands and just stay put for a while. Oh, to be witness to such a drama and the musical accompaniment which I can hear in your poem. I enjoyed the author's note almost as much as the poem itself. Thanks Chris. |
