Abandon by Kristina Woodhilltoday the wind and snow
moan together
their long low tangling howl
draws close voyeurs
the woman
buttoned up inside
like an old coat
in the back of her dark closet
stands taut behind draped windows' desires
even her breath too shallow
to fog the trembling window pane
in the field beyond
the geese balance on one leg
their heads buried deep in a wing
feigning sleep
quietly giving the lovers
the privacy
they do not seek

Author's Note: Comments made me realize I wasn't getting across my full intent, so I have rewritten, giving it more flesh, and retitled. Thanks for comments, and special thanks to Jim Benz for his editing skills.

Posted by Jim Benz on 02/01/08 at 07:06 PM I think this is a fine poem Kristina, and the additional detail makes it richer yet. Nice job! |
Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 02/01/08 at 10:51 PM I love the deep winter stillness this embodies and the privacy it invades. Terrific verbal snapshop and most enjoyed. Thanks. |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 02/02/08 at 01:57 PM A good sleepy winter poem I'd say. And easy to visualize with the elements (no pun intended) you've provided. |
