Black Tie Dinner by Kristina Woodhillit's true
I've never seen
a lean
magpie
always dressed
for dinner
in their guise
of
trim
black tie
all
invitations
promptly
r
and
duly
svp'd
formal plate
or
picnic fare
no matter
they'd
concede
it's all the same
to them
and such a shame
to them
to waste
even
one
tiny
taste
that lingers
as mouths
feed
in haste
the magpie's
food filosophy
no morsel
left behind!
you see
which then
sets up
quite logically
their clean sweep
eating
strategy
I'm told
a bird brain's
small
can't hold much
there
at all
yet dumpsters
made by
smarter hands
keep overflowing
landfilled
plans
as starving
eyes
look longingly
while obese
hips
sway lazily
and yet
I've never
ever seen
a lean
magpie 12/30/2007
Author's Note: Scavenger birds in black and white neat attire - always on the lookout for what's been left behind by other animals. Good team players, strong family ties, good teachers, usually the first ones up in the morning in our back pasture. I have learned much from watching them.

Posted by Mara Meade on 12/30/07 at 09:04 PM I agree with Rene but love what I discern as a comical aspect; black-tie denotes "formal" and the idea of a formal banquet having dishes picked absolutely clean makes me laugh! Any way you look at this, this is a great poem! |

Posted by Joan Serratelli on 12/31/07 at 04:32 PM I live in a very big "bird" area. i, too, have watched certain birds and mused about what their actions mean. They seem to function intheir own world.
Good write! |
Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 01/01/08 at 10:44 PM I love the "lean" shapely form of this poem, and the idea of the magpies "always dressed for dinner". I can imagine you watching them and thinking that and how appropriately they are dressed... it makes a comic scene.. especially since their scavenging is usually in the oddest not so formal dining rooms! |
Posted by Rhiannon Jones on 01/02/08 at 01:42 PM I loved this entertaining little peek at your avian neighbors. "all invitations promptly r
and duly svp'd" Clever fun! |
Posted by Jared Fladeland on 01/02/08 at 08:22 PM very interesting style. made me really pay attention, and appreciate the pecking of the food |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 01/03/08 at 03:17 AM As a long time bird watcher, I really enjoyed reading and reading again this one Kristina. To the best of my knowledge, we don't get Magpies in these parts, so I guess I'll have to Google the word to see what one looks like, though already I'm imagining a bird in a tuxedo. :o) |
