death is a tough life

by Charlie Morgan

dusk, a spring-board sprouts dark sparrow wings,
a painter's wrist slings the pink-tiger-eyed sky
behind the western hills overlooking lean coyotes
as they saunter in fear and hunger and devotion.

a west Texas evening settles in for an April night
asking all prairie dogs to hold the flit and chatter;
while the links in the food chain rattle like Scrooge,
a throb from the Earth's heart belches smokey gases.

all in preparation for a possible tomorrow, awaiting
the tendrils of change in each mite of magma spewed,
each rhino horn purveyed, aphrodisiac for man's avarice
exposing like rib bones the frailties of our universe.

A tough life and a great poem to preserve the natural history of it. A rich piece in imagery and message indeed Chaz!

A brilliant first stanza with a sunset's paint being flung (oh, I guess it is "slung")as night steps in. The "links in the food chain rattle like Scrooge" - a creepy forboding line.. The lines about "man's avarice" take this away from the normal hunger give and take, which I suppose is one of our signature weaknesses. A fine poem.

Chaz, the imagery and themes in this poem go right to my heart. I can see and experience them deep inside me. I'm adding this wonderful piece of sensitivity to my faves.
