What Twelfth is This

by Kristina Woodhill

what twelfth
is this before me now

twenty one degrees
of winter
lightly iced beyond my
window

thirty seven cards
of sparkle
waiting pen
from wrinkled brow

thirty eight unsealed
and empty
envelopes to slip
them in

yes

(one for if my hand
slides
lazing idle dreams
'cross pillowed
chin)

should i write
of each and every -
leap to capture
moment's spark

would i dare
include my dreams
intrude on travel's
roaded chart

day by day by
day by day by
we have lived
beside and
breathed

each connected
to the other
only walled
where hammers
sealed

at this twenty seventh
minute past this
10th hour
I reprise

what twelfth is
before me now and
will its ever
meet my eyes

pen is raised
to ink the passage
of another twelve
we've torn

do the buttons
care to rehole
all the days
this coat's been
worn

numbers counted
flipped and flaunted
turning figures
twirling facts

sprinkled liberally
with sugar
frosted with
top notched
class acts

rather i should gather
fingers
let the pen lay
cards to box

tens and tens
will hold and fold
into the twos
that one unlocks

circle formed
with closing warmth
of hands like gloves
embrace what's dear

keeping close
this twelfth of never's
message of
love's coming year

Reads superbly like an anthem poem. Excellent combination of spirit and art. Wish I had written this...glad you did...and posted it for all to see. :o)

CONGRATULATIONS on POTD! These images, each in themselves distinct and vivid, combine to create one image where the hands, mind, and heart are involved. Beneath the words are the trappings of the holiday season.
