the essence of the season

by Kyle Anne Kish

christmas
dismiss
the boxes and the bows,
the hovering blow-up
yard ornaments which
leak and overblow

blow over beethoven
let me hear the news
where we'’re sandwiched
in our own little worlds
trying to make amends

and exactly on December 25th
all smiles, bright and shiny
will be boxed and battened
with our families
and all i can say is, “blimey!”

forget the satin ribbons,
scotch tape and wrapping
paper. take a look around
you and smile upon
your neighbor.

walk into a soup kitchen
and leave your presence
there. read my lips, count
your chips and present
your presents with care.

take your worldly money
and spend it where
it belongs, among all
the underprivileged
... and share your christmas songs

for it’s not about the giving
nor how much money
we do spend. it’s more
about good will on earth
and why we do exist.

Your poem reminds me of my friend's good nature and caring. And it flows like she does, too. True and with rythym with thought. Beautifully expressed. (My friend's name is Kyle Anne Kish) < wink >

Kyle Anne, you remember the forgotten, who so often go without all the goodies most of us are used to, not only on Christmas, but the year round. The progression of your poem goes from ourselves to a universal expression of caring and compassion.
