I Wonder by Glenn CurrierI wonder what parents in Darfur have
to feed their children today,
for what THEY have to give thanks,
what Iraqis have to celebrate
or if their gratitude
is simply for another day.
I wonder if children in the projects
are giving thanks
that the rats did not wonder
into their bedrooms last night
or that no one broke in.
I wonder how we here gathered
ever take our next meal for granted
or forget to thank God for the wealth of love
that enfolds our days
or fail to remember Mom and Pop
and the cold November mornings they got up
to light the heater and start the turkey.
I wonder how many times
in the 5:00 a.m. darkness
our dads pulled themselves out of bed,
their muscles and bones still aching
from the previous day's labor,
how many bosses' unalloyed and undeserved meanness
they endured,
mindful of the utility bills and sick kids
awaiting their arrival back home.
Dear God, I wonder how much
of your unconditional love we can allow
to heal our brokenness
that walls us from one another.
I wonder how much grace
we can brook
to believe in our bright spirits
and to discover
in the warp and woof of our lives.
the miracles, the mercy, and the majesty
you have hidden there
just waiting for us. 11/22/2007 Author's Note: In Thanksgiving for my family and my pathetic.org friends who magnify the grace with their verse and creative energy.

Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 11/22/07 at 06:24 PM your words, Glenn, always ring true and there is so much in this poem that is ringing off the hook and true, which will not the I who read, not to be affected by it or react to it in kind, with utterances that it is indeed, truth, that which you have written so powerfully and poignantly and well. |

Posted by Charlie Morgan on 11/22/07 at 11:34 PM ...glenn, while thankfulness should be the earth's waistband, it is only viewed by so many of us? and lost on so many who don't feel as though they have to thank anyone? or don't feel obliged to do so...YET, your words are songs[lamentable, but songs]filling meheart...the Everychild, Everyman, Everywoman of all us earthlings should be thankful...i do love the tragedy in reality of your verse...strife of daily life is a weaved rag of wear, that at sometime or another we all don for wear...much love, and peace,bro... chaz |
