Brother Soldier

by Dave Fitzgerald

You shook my hand for that last goodbye,
Then you relaxed and waited to die.
You told me my friend, 'Don't you cry.
Tell my parents I'm here for them.'

I see you smiling in the corners of rooms.
Shaking your head when I'm playing the fool.
Heard you laugh when I try singing the blues.
I know, my brother you're here with me.

You told me to tell our brothers that you died brave.
To tell them you didn't shed a tear.
They know that already, you had no fear.
And they know you were always here for them.

I see you smiling in the corners of rooms.
Shaking your head when I'm playing the fool.
Heard you laugh when I try singing the blues.
I know, my brother you're here with me.

We carried you on your final journey,
It was the last but least that we could do.
You were here for us so we were there for you.
Our brother, we'll always remember you.

At your wake you brought smiles to the room.
And laughter at the way you played the fool.
No-one was there to sing the blues.
I know, my brother you're here with me.

The memory of those who have served, especially side by side with you is especially poignant and bittersweet. Not having served in the armed forces, I don't know this feeling. Thank you for giving those who haven't a glimpse into what it feels like.

"You shook my hand for that last goodbye, Then you relaxed and waited to die." ... s strong beginning to a poem that saddens my heart. Beautifully written and meant to be held in one's heart forever. Thank you for this.

This is so very moving. I have a journal entry written by a soldier in Iraq I put in my blog a while back. I'll have to look for it and p.m. it to you. This reminded me of that. Thank you for sharing this.
