dregs by Mary Frances Spenceri am contemplating
the dregs
of this beer
residual hops
sediment
particles
have settled in the bottom
of the
bottle
like life
the lighter
bubbles make their way up
and out
the white foam
on the lip
the froth
spilling over the top
gone first
evaporated
or sipped
i drink in
this particular
potion
the golden lager
refreshes
i will polish it all
off soon
the grounds
for a
good night's sleep
solid earthy
here and now
going down
down
down
down

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 11/19/07 at 03:35 PM This is a full bodied poem - I, too, love the froth of it, the bubbles making their way up and out, and particularly the "solid earthy here and now". |
Posted by Glenn Currier on 11/22/07 at 04:10 PM How easy to sip the froth on top and miss the lesson of the dregs... your brew causes me to pause and think beyond the bubbly. You effervesce Mary Frances! |
