Our Extra Hour

by Kathleen Wilson

we're both awake while others sleep
we turn this hour to poetry...

turn each minute and turn it deep
content to let the poets sleep...

turn it to the sleeping mind
where wakened imagery unwinds

stir it with a poets pen
tease it with a stroke of zen

a flash of wing this gleam of light
dispels the wordless depths of night

where starry skies fall on the page
and fairy dust is all the rage

our passionate rhyme is due to sun
absorbing dark the day turned two to one

Author's Note: This piece is a spontaneous collab with JD Clay.
It began with a light poetic note from me to JD early this morning.
I had decided an hour more poetry was better than an hour more sleep.
He was here too. He responded in kind
and the verses took shape at intervals this morning.

The couplets begin with my initial note, and alternate between us
concluding with my last.

Kathy, you and JD make great words together! I like this so much. It's cheerful and has a nice rhythm and rhyme to it. Nice to start the morning with, but unfortunately, I didn't read it until the night.

Kathy, as always, this is superb! You and Jadi did a wonderful job and I'm feeling the poetry. Thanks for sharing this.

I can so relate to the extra hours of poetry and less of sleep ... am also touched by the author's note and would say to Kathleen: 'welcome to JD' ...*m.a
