Under a Flamboyan Tree - to Kathleen

by Kristina Woodhill

I am wandering
within your tropic's
scene
Kathleen

I am drenched with
words from tree tops
you have climbed

it's raining frogs
where mystic fogs
are wrapping round
my mind

within your tropic
scenes,
my dear Kathleen

I am dancing
through a past
wet rainy sheen
Kathleen

my breathing slows
in heavy air
remembered
humid, frizzy hair

my clothes stick tightly
once again
like vine's
entwining
flora rare

umbrellas can't keep
out the liquid swirling
world so green
it's Eden's scene,
Kathleen

a thousand days
and nights I've walked
between
Kathleen

the coqui's croak is
distant
daily thunder
long since stilled

this desert
landlocked island
I now live on
holds my will

but I would meet
you gladly
we could have a spot of tea
and while away a rainy afternoon
just you and me
perhaps a flute
could float a note
or two out towards the sea

beneath the blushing red
of an old Flamboyan tree

Author's Note: To Kathleen Wilson, whose recent poems about Puerto Rico take me back to a few summers there many sunsets ago

The ongoing songful inner rhyming delightfulness of this invocation gives me a sweet thrill. That my fallen words could have conjured up these memories in such a vivid, articulate way--makes me joyful. "I'll take you home again.." We'll have tea and music, yes!

Kathleen is such a beautiful name and you have brought that out admirably with a lovely lilt. Loved the phrase "perhaps a flute could float a note or two out towards the sea" Very enjoyable read.

Nicely constructed rhythm and rhyme in this - tropical imagery, right down to the sticky clothes, is strong - wonderful tribute to our Ms. Wilson! d:-)

Oh how true and lovely and joyous! Everything perfect and fitting. You've put into words my exact feelings about Kath, and won my smile for the day!

Art honoring Art honoring Nature...a lovely tribute to a fine poet! I like the short-paced "-een" rhymes.

Humor, pathos, tribute in great poetic rhythm. Nostalgic, warm, and wonderful!
