My Friend's Death

by Don Matley

It's not like a river run dry
It's not that finite

But neither is it like the gentle wearing of mountains into hills
It's not that gradual

It's not the felling of some great tree
yet some branches will bud no more

it has added infinitesimal dimension to all our lives

It has shaken our very roots
stirred us into frenzied lethargy

It has made conspicuity of absence
and raked our bare nerves with cold dullness
It has not made contrition of vacuity
nor will it ever
for he would want us to keep warm, maintain joy, and be together

Beautiful. Honest, wonderful, heartbreaking. A worthy tribute indeed.

You give an elegant perspective to the death of your friend - original and touching.

Quite profound from start to finish Don. I especially like the oxymoron: frenzied lethargy. Worthy tribute!
