Wrestling with the Devil

by Kyle Anne Kish

His leathery, sun tanned
face still revealed his
smile lines, which crinkled
around his eyes
as well as his mouth.

I swear love seeped
from all of his pores
and surrounded me
with some sort
of hypnotic peace.

Someone referred
to him as James.

No, I thought, he’s
Big Jim. He will
always be Big Jim
because he lived
life bigger than big.

He partied hard, loved
strong, ate with fervor
and his booming voice
preceded him before
he even entered a room.

I looked at him closely,
wearing a dress shirt
and tie which wasn’t
suited to his attitude
or comfortable taste.

Big Jim.

I would
have wrestled with
the devil for Jim
if he would guarantee
me Jim would get up from
his final resting
place and twirl
me around
for one
last

dance.

...kyleann, you slay me with your words on big jim...what a loss-but you had him a while[we're all on loan from the Lord]...but your poetics "dress" him quite well as now we can see with the third eye by your words...lovely use of language in a loving way...peace, chaz

I hope everyone who needs a Big Jim - meets a Big Jim. I think Jim is reading this with a big'ole laugh, and a twirl in his step. :)

Hi Klye, Great write. A lovely tribute for Big Jim. Losing a love, wouldn't be easy at all for anyone. I'ld lose the devil and grab Jesus. thanks for sharing. :)

This made the corner of my eyelids prick all tearful-like. You described him perfectly.
