Baby Sweaters

by Genevieve Sturrock

two pointed sticks
and a ball of yarn
cast on stitches
one at a time
knit one, purl one
ribbing neatly made
row after row after row
rhythmic and soothing
the gentle scrape
of bamboo
the soft slither
of wool through
the fingers
it takes a week
then two
a month passes
put patient persistence
wins out in the end
as stitch by tiny stitch
my love is transformed
into a hug
you can wear

I agree! I would LOVE a hug to wear! Great write; very sweet and tender. Loved your description.

Must agree..."a hug you can wear" is a nice closure. I was caught up by "...rhythmic and soothing/the gentle scrape/of bamboo/the soft slither/of wool"...gotta go find my knitting needles :-)

A favorite!! Just delightful. I loved "the soft slither of wool through the fingers" and the ending is so endearing - "as stitch by tiny stitch my love is transformed into a hug you can wear"

This reminded me of the women in my life who sat in quite contemplation clicking those needles as shapes began to unfold between their fingers. You have captured it perfectly; I felt warm and fuzzy, like I was in one of those fuzzy hugs. A favorite, for sure! - RCat

That's a perfect way to describe such a loving artform. :)
