Of Distance, Loss and Gain

by Chris Sorrenti

          it’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all
         - Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now

another day’s trial slips behind
and for a few precious hours
I am free again

opening my bedroom window
sunset rushing in
with the sights and sounds of strangers
walking the path behind my house
bringing with them
countless of my own memories

marveling at how the mind works
editing out the bad
pleasantly haunted by the path chosen by me
or was it chosen by someone else?

wonderment at having come so far
each era branded with its own distinct song
and how each song carries
its own bundle of memories

and in this
I am as a snake
shedding its skin
only to grow too big for the next one
so many changes along the way

yet so much more remains the same
the most important questions still without answers
in the end
all that matters
to look forward to

An engaging reflection, Chris, very insightful with a universal-truth feel - I especially like the metaphor of a snake shedding skin.... d:-)

A quite time to take stock and then continue on - I feel your evolution here and also like the snake skin shedding.

Personally, I liked stanza three the best - pleasantly haunted by the path chosen by me, or was it chosen by someone else? - I find myself asking myself that very question quite often. Anyway, excellent poem; introspective and retrospective, very nicely done indeed... Good song too - Both Sides Now.

You have done a great job on this one Chris. I like the first three lines as well as the rest of the poem....Charlie

Nostalgic, yet looking forward with some expectancy. Really good logical and emotional progression.

Hi Chris, Great write, Chris. Sometimes change is good for us, yet it can be hard to do or to except. Good reflection on pondering and wondering about one's life. Makes one stop and think.

Because the wind is high
it blows my mind.
