Relaxed & Reserved

by Anita Mac

Is this
a more comfortable Distance
for you?

A bit of time and effort,
but you seem more…
relaxed—
more your…
    charming…
    salesman…
    self…

Do you think we can stay here?

Hovering
just    out    of    reach,
make the other smile and laugh—
and maybe, on special occasions, get flustered—
but still not so close
ourinsecuritiesarebroughtintosharp detailand
we fail to pretend.

This is
a more comfortable Distance
for me.

I wonder if you did your part, too.

Anita, I am blown away by this poem. The beginning reeled me in but "but still not so close ourinsecuritiesarebroughtintosharpdetailand we fail to pretend. This is a more comfortable Distance for me. I wonder if you did your part, too." ... but this, this was the kicker that made me go, "Wow, that's a so few words saying a whole lot." You've summed up feelings, provided imagery, given emotions to what could have turned out to be an emotionless poem and provided the reader with something to think about. Thanks for that.

Anita, congratulations on POTD! Your one-sided conversation carries overtones of irony and walking away from a situation that the narrator acknowledges in the mind that it just won't work. Incredible!

for some reason coming back to this made me catch my breath... i'm not really sure how or why, but this feels weirdly familiar, not because i read it before... but because of some feeling i'm not sure how to describe... congratulations on potd, that's awesome!
