Why, you old coot! by Kristina WoodhillWhy, you old coot!
I saw photos of your young
they are a hoot!
their fuzzy, frazzled naked
heads are red!
a rumpled fluff
of feathers from your bed
I stroll the path
around the ponds and laugh
as ducklings small, kick-kick
float lightly past
the goslings nestle
at the water's edge
soon taller than
spring's waving blades of sedge
but no where do I see
your chicks a foot
no awkward puddled
paddling of coot
no nudging beaks
that push them
here and there
to find the best of
muddied water's fare
What's up, old coot?
come on,
confess!
Is their youth's dress
too, too outre
just hatching from
your nest
perhaps you've whisked
them to another pool
a kind of private
feathered finish school
where
there
behind the scenes
they're soon attired
in classic charcoal black
their fuzz retired
and now white beaked
red eyed
a smooth and sleek new face
the teen years quickly
gone without a trace

Posted by Jean Mollett on 05/18/07 at 02:17 AM Hi Kristina,
This is so cute and funny. made me laugh. hadn't done that is a good while. I've used those words before. I love the title too, Why, you old coot!. If this were to be a movie, it sure would be something else. Thanks for sharing. I needed this. :) |

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 05/19/07 at 01:39 AM Heh...I bet you has as much fun writing this as we did reading it. A truly unique and stimulating expression. Oh the joy of well written poetry; rock on girl! |
Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 05/19/07 at 04:34 PM This is a wonderful, elegant, humorous poem--amazing to achieve all that at once. It's "a kind of private feathered finish school" in itself! Anyone who says or hears those titled words will never hear them the same way again. There's lyrical brilliance and finesse in expression--and every word is perfectly placed. At the beginning one might think you are sarcastically talking to a person--but that impression fades immediately and one is swept up into your "stroll around the ponds and laugh" with you. Full of witty, well said, perfectly timed expressions. It's in my favorites. |
