I Tell Myself

by Chris Sorrenti

I tell myself
The next time a cigarette wants to inhale me
Simply digest a poem
There are no calories in poetry
Though I heard tell once of a man in the Yukon
Who grew fat reading prose

Recent studies indicate
It can even clean up your complexion
Sex is often better after certain verses from Irving Layton
The Marlboro man will never know what he was missing

I tell myself
The next time a cigarette tries to drag on me
Simply dip into The Premature Burial
Or any story for that matter
That presses home the madness
Of midnight walks in pouring rain
To give the government more of my paycheque

The latest studies indicate
There are no carcinogens in free verse or rhyme
And they can even reverse the aging process
Babies are often born now reciting passages from Shakespeare
Once their mothers have aborted the tobacco companies

I tell myself
The next time a cigarette pack wants to unwrap me
Simply crush it under the weight of Webster's
Or any book for that matter
That presses home the absurdity
Of inhaling noxious substances
Just to make my heart speed up
Then later to slow it down

Recent studies indicate
There's no cholesterol in paper
Even after it's been given tone and meter
Though I heard tell once of a woman in P.E.I.
Who had a heart attack reading Stephen King

I also know a poet
Who smoked three packs of cigarettes
While trying to find the right words to use
On a piece about quitting smoking

Good one Chris. I am sorry to say I let the darn things fog my brain...Charlie

you know, i wondered how many you lit while writing said piece :) its very creative though and it made me think twice about ever starting to smoke, though the temptation isn't really threatening at this moment in time...

Oh my God, Chris! The picture at the end is the kicker.

She takes a satisfying draw and slowly exhales then pokes it in the right corner of her mouth in just the right position so the smoke doesn't obscure the screen to free her hands to type...

You gave me a great laugh that wasn't even followed by the obligatory cough.

Truly brilliant!! I breathed deeply of this and lived to read it again, and I did....

Hi Chris, Great write. The picture goes good with it too. I'm so glad I did quit years, before I did get the habit. No one said it would be easy. It's hard to, but with help and will power one can quit. And alot of prayers too. :)

Been there, done that. It's been a year and I STILL wake up and reach for my beloved ciggie. Loved the last stanza and I'd bet it's true! The picture said it all. Great right and very enjoyable read.

a good thing to tell yourself. Brenda Ueland in her book So You Want to Write has a good slant on this, she claimed coffee and smokes don't help but clutter the mind. She quit smoking. This was long ago. Good poem.

Good Luck! Trying to quit myself... hard to do, because it is an addiction, habit, and vice! Great Poem!

I laugh in sympathy. Someone used the term sardonic. That is it! (I thank the Lord it is one habit I never developed. Praying that you will be able to quit!)

This is very amusing, Chris, yet with that serious undertone. I love the analogies between cigarettes and poetry. I'm not a smoker or ex-smoker, but it's something to which we can all relate. Just as an aside, one of Billy Collins' most famous poems is called "The Best Cigarette" about quitting smoking - read it if you haven't already. When I met him recently and asked for an autograph, he told me he was once asked to autograph a cigarette.... d:-) P.S.: the "C.S.M." is a nice touch....

Very clever, Chris. I really enjoyed this piece. Your humour always makes me smile (which I needed today). Thank you. -Kat :) oxo
