without why.

by Emily Tong

it’s weird. my hair sometimes curls Flouncing here
and there across my eyes Or blows away
from the elastic. i don’t know why. it’s clear
not at all. sometimes i like someone day
for day and week for week and then i Don’t.
why? but why

bother analize unknown
knowledge? because we don’t understand, won’t
ever know Why some shells of seas have shown
light beneath the waters. or Why a duck’s
quack won’t echo. or How in the world could
a boy like the Color Pink. Where’s the luck
in a pair of socks or numbers? and Would
the sky ever settle for Something less?

i don’t understand. i know little of
hair or ducks and numbers, of nowthreadless
socks in the dryer and worn with love.
Why would you understand what cannot (by
us) be understood? blessed we, without why.
