On Relearning How To Write

by Chris Sorrenti

Is it possible to forget how to ride a bicycle?
though the process seems more akin to rust

As with anything in life
the task begins with a decision to take action
and a series of steps

Step 1

Grasp handlebars firmly with both hands

Step 2

Place either left or right foot on the corresponding pedal
which side depends on the potential cyclist

Step 3

Swing other leg over the back of the bicycle
then forward and down onto the remaining pedal

Step 4

Simultaneously push down on the first pedal
to gain initial thrust

Step 5

Which in turn allows balance to begin
whether it's maintained is up the individual rider

With a multitude of chores I do without thinking
tugging at my brain spokes
in this moment of clarity
I view writing the same way

And where the wheels of my pen will take me
only the page ahead knows for sure

Hi Chris. I think you're right, you don't fall off unless you stop peddling. Good one!

Hi Chris, Great write. Yeah, when ya fall off. ya get up and dust off and try, try again. Oh, the memories of riding a bike. Yup, your right about writing. it's basiclly the say way. ya never, ever give up. Quite witty too. The picture goes great with it. me, likes it. thanks for sharing. :)

"With a multitude of chores I do without thinking tugging at my brain spokes in this moment of clarity I view writing the same way" I love the brain spokes idea here and the routine of getting on and riding - simple, really - I must practice more. ;)

Love this, and you made that photo turn into a brain with no visual effects. I think it is very much like you've explained. And the "clarity" of stepping back and seeing it! It is amazing how we do anything.. especially write! And the poem has that inner feel you are talking about--when it happens like this... "balance".

Incredible Chris! You take two dissimilar concepts and compare them like they match naturally. It seems that when someone is learning how to do something, like riding a bike or writing, we forget how difficult it was at first. Falling off the bike and cramped hands when writing fade from our memory. Excellent!

interesting analogy, and one could also consider the various speed choices on some bikes. Mine's old, only three speeds, but has a good basket, so I look like Mary Poppins or something. Speeds for writing could be varied too. Well done.
